You have a blog for your amazing product or service. You’ve worked your butt off, spent hours, days and weeks perfecting it and setting up your blog. But, no one is reading it. I feel your pain! I know your frustration. As a lot of marketing influencers say, just because you build it, it doesn’t mean they’ll come.

Remember that saying, I’ll probably be using it a lot.

So how do you get noticed? Google of course!  Here are a few easy tips to get your content in front of your potential customers using SEO (search engine optimization).

Finding Keywords

The first big step is to do your keyword research.  A great place to start is Google trends (https://trends.google.com) which is a little more time intensive or you can opt for a paid service like SEMrush.com, which will not only help you identify the best performing keywords but also provide phrases as well.

Incorporating Keywords In Your Blog Post

So now you have your keywords. Great job! Next step is putting them in the correct places.  For best results, use your keywords where they will have the most impact for your customers and search engine crawlers.

Title Tags

Your title tag specifies the title of your web page. They are displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) as the clickable headline. The title tag should be an accurate and concise description of your content.  Title length should be 60 characters in the following format:

Keyword 1 – Keyword 2 | Brand Name

Of course, the title is very important for the searchers to find you but it also boosts your SEO optimization.  To maximize the effectiveness of your title, give each page a unique title, use your most important keyword first and don’t overuse your keyword.

Headings and Subheadings

These are tags that are used for the creations of headings. duh.  Those designations for h1 through h6 were not just for formatting!  Header tags matter less than they used to for SEO optimization, but they are an easy way to work in keywords organically.

Anchor Text

Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink.  Including backlinks in your blog is important for SEO rankings and so is anchor text associated with them.  SEMRush.com gives a great description of the 9 different types of anchor texts that can be used.  But take note, do not overload your post with keyword-heavy anchor text.  Incorporate these links organically. Another tip, use the headers in order! Don’t skip h2 and go straight to h3.

Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. They are commonly used on SERPs to display preview snippets for a given page. Try to make your meta descriptions between 150 and 160 characters.  Anything longer will be cut off when displayed.  Now, neither meta descriptions nor meta keywords factor into Google’s ranking algorithms for web search anymore, however, think carefully about what you put in this box.  Meta descriptions tell searchers exactly what your page is about and whether it meets what they’re looking for or not.

Blog Images

There is always an option to add descriptions to the photos you upload to your blog, don’t forget this important SEO real estate!   The alt tags and title tags you attach to your chosen image improves the accessibility of your website and search engine ranking.  According to Yoast.com, the alt text describes what’s on the image and the function of the image on the page.  To make the best of this space, make this text long and descriptive.   If a keyword would be useful for finding something that is on the image, include it in the alt tag if you can.

Conclusion

Now, a word of caution, do not try to overuse your keywords in the text. Google doesn’t like and neither will the people trying to get through your blog post.

Pro Tip: On my WordPress site, I use Yoast and I will shout it from the rooftops! After I write a post, the Yoast plugin checks it all for me!
